Making the Transition to Dentures

If you have lost or are missing teeth, you need a viable solution to replace them. Implant dentures are among the top options, as they are affordable and effective. It does take some time to adjust to life with dentures. You may have to change your eating habits for a short period of time and practice your speech patterns at home. However, the transition to dentures is simple and generally made within a few weeks of having them in place. To minimize your frustrations as you make the transition, use these tips to confidently eat, speak, laugh, and live with dentures.

You may be concerned that you will never eat your favorite foods, such as steak, corn on the cob, or frozen desserts. However, replacing your missing teeth with implant dentures doesn’t have to mean the end of delectable dining as you know it. You just need to spend some time learning how your denture implant functions and making a few adjustments to your eating habits in the beginning. Try these tips to regaining your confidence when it comes to eating with your new dentures:

    • Biting and chewing will feel different at first. For this reason, you should begin the transition with soft foods, like eggs, yogurt, and steamed vegetables.  Exercise patience and get comfortable with various food textures before resuming your normal eating habits.
    • In the beginning, you may feel as though food has lost its flavor. Don’t worry, your taste buds still work, but, your brain may be a little more focused on other things, like keeping your dentures in place. As you adjust to your dentures, eating will become second nature again and your sense of taste will return.
    • Be cautious when consuming very hot and very cold beverages. Much like your sense of taste, sensing hot and cold may be more difficult than usual because the focus your brain has currently shifted to learning to use your dentures.
    • Over time, you will become confident with eating. As your experience with your dentures progresses, you can begin eating chewy and crunchy foods once again. Remember to cut your food into small pieces and chew thoroughly.
    • Foods that require high amounts of biting force, such as corn on the cob and whole apples, should be approached using a denture adhesive. Denture adhesives give you greater security in the placement of your dentures, as well as protect your mouth against food particles and bacteria that can cause bad breath.
